Your day begins with a leisurely drive alongside the shimmering waters of Loch Linnhe to Loch Leven, where the tranquil beauty of the Scottish Highlands unfolds before you. Drive through the charming village of Ballachulish to soak in the panoramic views of the Brooding Glen Coe mountains mirrored in the glassy surface of the loch as we enter into Scotland's most notorious glen.
Tucked beneath the brooding peaks of the Scottish Highlands lies Glencoe — a valley of staggering beauty and, more hauntingly, of unforgettable sorrow. While today visitors come for the dramatic landscapes, few leave without hearing whispers of the infamous Massacre of Glencoe, one of Scotland’s darkest historical episodes.
The Massacre of Glencoe: A Highland Tragedy Steeped in Betrayal

The massacre took place on 13 February 1692, in the dead of winter, and involved the slaughter of members of the MacDonald clan by government troops who had, until then, been staying in their homes as guests. This act of betrayal shocked the Highlands and left a stain on Scottish history that’s still remembered with sorrow.
So how did it come to this?
After the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when William of Orange and his wife Mary replaced the Catholic King James VII of Scotland (James II of England), Highland clans were pressured to swear allegiance to the new monarchs. The deadline was 1 January 1692. Many clans hesitated — not out of loyalty to James, but due to confusion and poor communication.
MacIain of Glencoe, the chief of the MacDonalds, eventually set out to take the oath but was delayed by snowstorms and red tape. Though he finally swore allegiance — just a few days late — the government used his delay as an excuse for punishment.
Enter Captain Robert Campbell of Glenlyon, leading a regiment of government troops. In early February, they arrived in Glencoe and were billeted with the MacDonalds, who welcomed them with traditional Highland hospitality. For 12 days, the soldiers lived among their hosts — eating, drinking, and sharing fires.
But in the early hours of 13 February, the soldiers turned on their hosts.
On orders from higher up — notably Secretary of State Sir John Dalrymple, who saw it as a chance to make an example — the troops rose from their beds and murdered 38 men, women, and children. Others fled into the freezing mountains, many succumbing to exposure.
The horror of Glencoe lies not only in the killing, but in the betrayal of Highland hospitality — a sacred code. The massacre broke more than lives; it broke trust. Even other clans, including those traditionally at odds with the MacDonalds, were appalled.
Though there was an inquiry and public outcry, no one was ever punished.
Today, Glencoe is peaceful, its slopes silent but heavy with memory. A stone monument near the village commemorates the fallen MacDonalds, and visitors often pause here to reflect. The valley itself, shrouded in mist and myth, feels like a place suspended in time — where the land still grieves.
